In January 2011 UEA Civil and Mining was awarded a 4 year contract with Kimberley Metals Group to provide Continuous Surface Mining services at their Ridges Iron Ore Project in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. Production will commence in April 2010 and it is expected that UEA Civil and Mining will mine 10Mt over this period under a $28.5m contract.
The Ridges Project consists of two gently dipping zones of sandstone hosted hematite mineralisation called the Sam and Tony deposits located along the top of a high ridge line. They both contain outcropping hematite overlying magnetite mineralisation. The site hosts mineral resources in excess of 67Mt. The current resources extend over a strike length of 3.5km and vary in width from 100-250metres.
UEA Civil and Mining will utilise a fleet of Vermeer T1255 Terrain Levellers on a 24/7 roster to mine the iron ore deposit which lends itself to continuous surface mining due its geology. Surface mining these deposits will minimise dilution and maximise the efficiency of the Sam and Tony pits which are long, narrow and shallow. The ore and waste broken down by the surface mining process will be deposited in-pit either in small windrows (<1m high) or shallow layers (200 – 400 mm deep). This will be loaded into trucks by front end loaders and trucked to the appropriate area.

Kimberley Metals Group (KMG) is a private exploration and mining company based in Perth, Western Australia and 100% owner of the Ridges Iron Project (Ridges Project). The Ridges Project is located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia 165km south of Wyndham and 17km North West of Argyle Diamond Mine adjacent to the Great Western Highway. KMG has already secured additional iron ore in the region and are planning for a 15 year mine life.
